Son et Lumiere

SON ET LUMIÈRE at COLYTON, 11th, 12th, 13th OCTOBER at 7.30 pm

Those who have a taste for something a little different, with an eclectic mix of community,  music, history, architecture as well as a story, will enjoy the forthcoming presentation by members of St Andrew’s Church, Colyton where a Son et Lumière is being performed over a three day period on 11th, 12th and 13th October.

A Son et Lumière is a quasi-theatrical performance in which recorded words and music (Son) combine with a lighting display (Lumière) and sound effects, to present the history of the place featured, in this case the Church, which has stood since the 12th Century.   The presentation will use its special format to demonstrate to the audience how St Andrew’s has stood at the centre of Colyton for over 800 years, and how the Church, its architecture and its people have developed the history of Colyton and its surroundings.   There will be drama and excitement in topics such as the Plague and the Monmouth Rebellion (Colyton was described as the most rebellious town in Devon!) contrasted with quieter, lyrical moments of poetry and reflection, such as the town’s connection to the novelist Jane Austen, all of which will be heightened by music of the period.   The presentation will describe these and other events up to the present day, including for example the destruction by fire of much of the Church’s fabric in 1933, and will explore the emotions of those who witnessed them.

Such a production has not been seen in the South West for probably over 40 years (a similar event was held in Exeter Cathedral in 1969), and will appeal to a wide audience, of all ages.   A “must” for the diary – tickets are available at only £8 each (to include a programme) (students holding a valid pass and under 18’s free) from Haynes Hardware, The Square, Colyton, EX24 6JR and will be available on the door.
