Axe Valley Filling Station

What is it??  It is a contemporary vehicle for bringing Christian renewal and evangelism to the UK.  In other words a chance for any of us to ‘top up’ with some amazing worship, talks, prayers, and a chance to meet other Christians across the area.  Not meant to be a rival to your Parish church, but to fill you up so you can go back out.

A friend and I went along on Friday, were greeted warmly and served coffee/tea and homemade cakes, then followed some fabulous band led worship, and a challenging talk from ‘Keith’

Their Biblical mandate is from Psalm 114:8  ‘Who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water’  They see the pools described as places of deep spiritual refreshment for the existing church, bringing water into the hard dry areas.

All meetings held in Axminster Guildhall, at 7.30 pm —  Friday 3rd April,  1st May,  5th June, 24th July, 21st August.

BRIDAL FLOWERS AND FASHION

slovak-wedding-852844-m

Festival to be held at St Andrews Church, Colyton – 19 to 22 June 2014

Each day of the Exhibition will open at 10 am.   There will be about 35 exhibits, many of which will have been arranged by prominent organisations in the Colyton area, including the Churches from the Holyford Mission Community.   These will all feature Bridal flowers and fashion – the dresses will illustrate bridal gowns from the early 20th century, including two from WWII, the material for which was purchased using clothing coupons, as well as a deep red bridal dress from 1963!   In addition, some Honiton Lace wedding veils will be on display, loaned by Honiton Museum, whose collection of Lace is numbered among the finest in the world.

Each day there will be live music in the Church.   Refreshments will be available throughout the festival.

There will be formal Concerts at the Church at 7.30pm in the evenings, on Thursday, an Organ Recital by Andrew Millington, the renowned Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral, on Friday, a Concert of choral music given by the choir of St Andrews Church and finally on Saturday a Concert by some Young Musicians whose mature talents are all the more remarkable because they are all still at school.

The ticket price for the Concerts will be £6 each, but anyone wishing to attend all 3 concerts may obtain a “Festival Ticket” for £15 – all tickets may be obtained from the Colyton Pharmacy, and of course will be available on the door before each Concert.   Children under 16 will be admitted at no charge.

On Sunday, the Exhibition will end with a Service of Thanksgiving at 6.30pm, at which the sermon will be delivered by Canon Jane Wilson, who is the Bishop’s Advisor for Women’s Ministry.

Dementia Friends

Bishop Nick has highlighted the subject of dementia in a recent communication with clergy and readers. As our population ages there is a chance that 1 in 3 of us could potentially develop some form of dementia in our lifetime. We are therefore ever more likely to have people with dementia in our parishes. There was an article about Dementia Friends in the last Diocesan News insert and information is on the Diocesan website. There is currently a national advertising campaign to raise awareness of dementia and to recruit more Dementia Friends.

Dementia Friends is:

  • A social action movement.
  • Funded by the department of Health for England and the Cabinet Office.
  • Led by Alzheimer’s Society as a strand of its work to create Dementia Friendly Communities.
  • Target to reach one million Dementia Friends by 2015.

When I attended the annual Reader’s Conference at Brunel Manor this year Sally Farrant (Diocesan Social Responsibility Officer) did a Dementia Friends information session for one of the workshops that I attended. This was a very good presentation and I decided that I could offer to do this. I then did a day’s training in Exeter to become a Dementia Champion which means I can deliver this prescribed hour long information session. The information is an introduction to the subject delivering 5 key messages.  I am willing to offer this session to any church group who may be interested. You can find out more about Dementia Friends on the website dementiafriends.org.uk or alzheimers.org.uk.

It is now also possible to do a Dementia Friends session online on their website.

If any group in your church would like me to present a Dementia Friends information session lasting up to 1 hour, please get in contact with me for more information and possible dates/group sizes. I’d like at least 10 people with perhaps a maximum of 20. It would be suitable for Pastoral Teams, PCC’s, or Mothers’ Union groups for example.

Credit Union Meeting

logo plough and share

  • Paula Anscomb,
  • Manager of Plough and Share Credit Union
  • will be giving a presentation on
  • Tuesday 8th April at 7.30
  • in the Sunday School Building, Colyton
  • All welcome!

Why Credit Unions?

Credit Unions make loans at reasonable rates, and provide an ethical alternative to payday loan companies and loan sharks. They are “an idea whose time has come”, when people are facing many challenges in managing their money and making it stretch. They are a practical way to enable people to escape the “rising tide” of debt, which is one of the chief reasons for needing food banks. They can provide quick relief for an urgent problem – but also build long-term resilience and the habit of saving.

Credit unions have a mutual structure, and anyone can start saving with as little as £2, or invest substantial amounts with an annual dividend and legal guarantees.

We can help ourselves and our neighbours by using and promoting their services. Credit unions are local organisations – Plough and Share is specifically for Devon only. It provides a practical means to build up the resources of the local community.

“I fully support the work and aspirations of our Credit Unions in Devon.”  Bishop Nick, Bishop of Crediton

Celebrating Creation

stock-photo-17022754-brightly-colorful-fireworks-in-the-night-skyIn the beginning God created the universe and the world … Majestic and wonderful, it reflects God’s holiness and greatness.  We are created lovingly to enjoy it – to marvel at its beauty and share with all the creatures that dwell on it.  The whole creation reveals the glory of the Creator.
